Our UAS History
Founded over 20 years ago, Innovaero has built a strong track record of innovation, technical excellence and delivery.
Since 2006, the company has evolved from aeronautical product development into a fully integrated capability spanning research and development, certification, manufacturing, maintenance and operations across the aerospace and defence sectors.
Beyond the OWL family, that heritage includes a series of pioneering uncrewed platforms developed for Australian and allied defence programs. These include the long-range FOX VTOL Tactical/Maritime UAS (~250 kg MTOW) and STRIX VTOL hybrid UAS for BAE Systems Australia (~900 kg MTOW).
2020 – Innovaero FOX (VTOL Tactical/Maritime UAS)
FOX was a maritime uncrewed aerial system (MUAS) developed around the specific requirements of Commonwealth (Department of Defence) programs. Development was later paused to prioritise the OWL-B, with the design retained for future opportunities.
2022 – SuperFOX (RAAF Design Study)
A design study undertaken for the Royal Australian Air Force, exploring a large uncrewed aircraft of approximately 2,000kg gross weight. The investigation produced two configurations, one turbofan and one turboprop, enabling the RAAF to assess the merits of such a system in operational use.
2023 – STRIX Program (Next-Gen Hybrid VTOL UAS)
Developed under contract to BAE Systems Australia, STRIX is a ~900kg hybrid, VTOL tandem-wing, multi-domain and multi-role UAS capable of air-to-ground strike and persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR). Innovaero led the majority of the program, designing, manufacturing, and structurally testing the airframe, while BAE Systems provided the vehicle management system (VMS), and both companies jointly conducted flight testing. Innovaero/BAE Systems Australia took STRIX from design to successful first flight in under two years.
